What level of German and English do I need to participate in the program?

Your German level must be at least A2, and your English should be Intermediate. For work in major cities, German must be at least Intermediate.

Will the language level affect the position offered?

Participants with a good command of German are more likely to receive a job offer for a higher-level position. Those with only basic German usually work as cleaners or housekeepers.

Is it hard to pass the language skills interview?

One of the steps in applying to the Working Holiday in Germany program is a Skype interview with the program sponsor. The interview is informal and covers simple, general topics — where you study, why you want to join the program, your hobbies, and more.

How do I pay for the program?

After you sign the agreement at IEC, you’ll need to pay the €300 registration fee within 7 calendar days. The remaining program fee is due within 14 calendar days after your sponsor finds a job offer and you confirm that offer.

Can I travel after my program ends?

The work program in Germany doesn’t have a travel period (grace period) like Work and Travel USA. So participants travel around the country on weekends. You can also talk to your employer in advance; they may give you more days off or arrange a different work schedule.

Can I participate in the program twice in one year — once during summer break and once during winter break?

You can join the program once a year — either for summer break or for winter break.

Do I need to bring any extra money?

It’s essential. Upon arrival in Germany, we recommend participants have at least 900–1,150 euros with them. Participants should expect expenses for food, accommodation, and public transport.

When can I fly to Germany?

The program sponsor sets the optimal arrival date 2-4 weeks before departure. Participants should buy tickets only after the sponsor has sent the arrival dates.

How many hours do participants work?

You’ll typically work 38-40 hours a week, though some employers offer 30-35. Be prepared to work overtime — it’s common in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Where do participants live?

Many employers offer accommodation, but not always for free — the employer may deduct the cost of rent from your wages.
If the employer doesn’t offer housing, the program sponsor in Germany will help you find a place to live — you can stay with a host family, in youth hostels, or rent an apartment (prices start at 500 euro per month; in larger cities — from 500 euro to 800 euro).

My friend and I are going together. Will we be able to work in the same city?

This option may be available, but it isn’t guaranteed. When you submit your enrollment application, you’ll need to provide the first and last name of the friend you’re going with.

Can I choose the city I want to work in?

Participants need to be flexible when it comes to location — a job offer may come from any city.

What’s the minimum wage?

The minimum wage in Germany is €9.35 per hour.

Can I work for two employers?

All work permits will be issued for one specific employer only, so you won’t be able to work for two employers.

When do participants get paid?

Pay is usually issued at the start of the month. That means participants receive their first paycheck at the start of their second month of work.

How do participants get paid?

Most employers pay wages to a credit card, but opening a bank account in Germany can be quite difficult for program participants. Don’t worry — the IEC office will give you guidance on the best way to proceed.

What about taxes?

The employer pays taxes on behalf of employees, which are deducted from their salary. These taxes can be refunded the following year.
