Modern Germany is an industrialized country — a major global industrial power — that has lovingly preserved the traditional, centuries-old character of its cities and towns with rich histories. Centuries of feudal fragmentation also left positive results: after all, some 300 principalities and free imperial cities, competing with one another, showcased their power and wealth in the form of astonishingly beautiful buildings. Interestingly, dialect differences in German are still so pronounced that TV programs in the north sometimes include sign-language interpretation when people from the south are speaking. You won’t find a “backward province” here in the Russian sense, although there are noticeable differences in economic development between the federal states. Throughout its history, Germany has benefited from a favorable geographic location, a mild climate, and varied terrain.
