Anyone over 18 who’s ready to help and work in a team. Special skills are welcome but not required — what matters most is the desire and willingness to learn.

How much will I earn?
Volunteer projects are unpaid. But most importantly, volunteers get something money can’t buy: a sense of purpose, the satisfaction of doing work that helps where it’s truly needed. Plus, taking part in volunteer projects gives you a truly unique life experience and lets you immerse yourself in the country’s cultural traditions.
What language skills do I need to join this program?
English.
What level of English do I need to join the program?
You need conversational-level English. If you’re applying for educational programs, your English should be above intermediate.
Do you have to be a student to join a volunteer program?
No. Anyone who wants to can participate.
How long can I participate?
The minimum duration of a volunteer project is 2 weeks, and the maximum is 12 weeks.
When do the programs start?
Volunteer programs in South Africa usually start on Sundays and end on Saturdays.
When should I apply for the program?
The Volunteer in South Africa program runs year-round. You should submit your documents at least 1–2 months before your preferred start date.
How can I pay for the program?
After you sign the agreement at IEC, you’ll pay the $300 registration fee within 7 calendar days.
The second part of the program fee is due after you’re fully registered in the sponsor’s system.
How many hours will I work, and will I have any days off?
Volunteers typically work 5–6 hours a day and get two days off each week.

Where will I live while I’m working?

Yes. The program fee covers accommodation, meals, project organization, transfers, and support from on-site coordinators.
Will I be met at the airport?
Yes.
Can I go with my friend?
Yes, of course. When you apply, you’ll need to provide the first and last name of the friend you’re traveling with.
What insurance do I need?
We recommend that participants get health insurance.
