What is volunteering?

Volunteering, or volunteer activity, is socially beneficial work done voluntarily without expectation of monetary compensation.

What is the official language of Costa Rica?

The official language is Spanish, but English is also spoken in many tourist areas.

What currency is used in Costa Rica?

The national currency is the colón (CRC).

Is it safe to travel in Costa Rica?

Yes, Costa Rica is generally considered safe for tourists. Still, it’s best to follow basic precautions: don’t leave valuables unattended and avoid poorly lit or isolated areas at night.

What vaccinations do I need for a trip to Costa Rica?

Vaccination against hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, and rabies is recommended.

What’s the weather in Costa Rica?

Tropical climate: hot and humid year-round.

How much will I earn?

Volunteering is unpaid.

What language skills do I need to participate in this program?

English or Spanish.

Do I need to know Spanish?

It’s not required, especially in tourist areas, but Spanish is a big plus in villages.

When should I apply to the program?

Volunteer in Costa Rica runs year-round; you should submit your documents at least 1–2 months before your desired start date.

How do I pay for the program?

After signing the agreement at IEC, the registration fee of $300 is due within 7 calendar days. The second part of the program fee is due after the participant is fully registered in the sponsor’s system.

Do I need to be a student to participate in a volunteer project?

No, we welcome anyone who’s 18 to join our volunteer program. Many projects don’t require special skills or prior experience, but you should be able to adapt to a new culture and be ready to contribute to a good cause.

How many working hours will I have, and will I have any days off?

On average, volunteers work 20–30 hours per week and get two days off.

Where will I be living?

Volunteers usually live in a volunteer house in the city center or with host families.

Can I join a program with my friends?

Yes, of course. When you apply, you’ll need to provide the first and last name of the friend you’re traveling with.

How long can I participate?

Minimum program length: 2 weeks.
