Internship in Mauritius: answers to questions
Internship in Mauritius
Live on white-sand beaches, intern in hospitality or marketing, and enjoy a tropical paradise!
What level of English do I need to join the program?
To join the program, your English level must be at least Upper-Intermediate. Participants in the Internship in Mauritius must be able to speak and understand English fluently.
What level of French do I need to join the program?
French isn’t a primary requirement for acceptance into the Internship in Mauritius program. If you speak French fluently, it will simply increase your chances of landing a better internship. If your French isn’t strong or you don’t speak it at all, it won’t affect your acceptance into the Internship in Mauritius program.
Is it hard to pass an interview testing your English?
Not at all! The language check is an informal conversation about general topics — where you study, what subjects you’re studying or have studied, why you want to join the program, whether you have any hobbies, and so on. The interview is with the program sponsor over Skype, and your camera must be on.
How can I pay for the program?
After you sign the agreement with IEC, you’ll need to pay a registration fee of €300 within 7 calendar days. The second part of the program fee is due within 14 calendar days after your sponsor finds an internship placement and you confirm the offer.
Can I participate in the program for less than 3 months?
The minimum participation period for the program is 3 months. This requirement comes from the sponsor, so the dates can’t be changed.
How can I find housing in Mauritius if my employer doesn’t provide it?
In that case, your program sponsor can help you. For an additional fee, the host company can arrange suitable housing — either a student residence or a private apartment. You can ask an IEC representative for more information about the cost of this service.
My friend and I are going together. Can we work in the same city?
This option is possible, but the sponsor can’t guarantee it. When you apply, you’ll need to give the first and last name of the friend you want to go with. Keep in mind: to increase your chances of being placed together for an internship, you should study in the same field or both take internships in Hospitality and Tourism, and try to have the same level of English.
What is the minimum stipend?
The minimum stipend you’ll receive is €150–€200. Yes, it’s not the highest pay, but if your employer provides accommodation (more common in Tourism and Hospitality), that amount is usually enough to live on the island frugally and without stress.
When can I fly to Mauritius?
Arrival and departure dates must match the dates on the document called Residence Permit, which is issued by the authorities in Mauritius. Therefore participants must confirm their ticket dates with the program sponsor before purchasing and only buy tickets after the sponsor approves the dates.
Can I change my employer?
All documents will be issued for a specific employer and cannot be changed. If you have any disagreements with your employer, exchange program participants should contact the sponsor — they’ll help find the best solution.
